5 Star Hotel and Conference Center in Andermatt, Competition
with Holzer Kobler Architekturen and Roland Gay Architecte

Client: Andermatt Alpine Development Company AG
Location: Andermatt, Switzerland
Date: 2007-2010

Two prominent wood volumes atop a stone plinth define this hotel as the welcoming icon of Andermatt’s new resort development. Like boulders in the landscape, they create a dialogue with the spectacular natural setting, framing views of the valley. In a scale fitting of the region’s historic grand hotels, the building’s cliff-like facades are subtly textured in wood, while its sloped roofs integrate with the town’s rooftop landscape.

Guests are greeted in a lobby atrium stretching over two levels that incorporates a reception, bar, spa facilities, two restaurants and a congress center. Within these common areas as well as in the guest rooms, modern reinterpretations of traditional wood and stonework dominate the material palette. Large format apertures are precisely placed to facilitate panoramic views of the breathtaking scenery, offering abundant light that further enhances the spacious rooms. Finely detailed, traditional carpentry helps to evoke a unique and warm atmosphere.
