CINEMONT

Multiplex Cinema and Event Space
with Meierpartner Architekten

Client: Cinevital, Biel
Location: Delémont, Switzerland
Date: 2015

Located in an industrial area southeast of Delémont’s city center, the simple volume of the Cinemont Multiplex stands out in the conglomerate of leisure facilities, retail outlets, and parking lots. In this context, the interiors of the lobbies and the event space are conceived as generous multi-functional zones with an industrial flair. The material palette consists of structural concrete walls, raw wood flooring, and plastered ceilings. The color palette favors a combination of dark blue and gold tones in the lobbies, transitioning to blue and black in the theaters. The atmosphere is complemented by a few key elements with strong industrial character, such as the pendant lights on the second floor.

Along with the wall graphics, the lighting scheme contributes to the creation of a quintessential cinema atmosphere, combining indirect lighting, spots and several accent lights. The visitor experiences contrasting sequences: the generous, bright lobby spaces, followed by dark blue corridors and finally cutting-edge screening rooms. Famous scenes from classic films are used as perforation patterns to create large sun-shading screens over the three main window openings. The images are pixelated using a custom-made oblong hole pattern, then laser cut out of large metal sheets. At night, the motifs act like backlit lanterns on the façade, creating poetic signage visible from a distance.
