HOUSE OF THE FUTURE

Opening Event and Exhibition on the Topic Future

Client: W.I.R.E.
Location: Zurich, Switzerland
Date: 2013-2014

Located at the Bärengasse in the heart of Zurich, the ‘House of the Future’ is a temporary institution created by W.I.R.E. (Web for Interdisciplinary Research & Expertise) for the examination of future trends in our society, from eating habits to large-scale data management. It is housed in a landmarked medieval building, on loan from the city for one year. Nau2 developed the scenography for this unconventional institution and, in collaboration with Disney Research, designed the interactive installation ‘Gates to the Future’ as a centerpiece for the opening event.

In contrast to the historical structure, the installation represents two abstract windows looking towards the future. The scale of the forms, the extreme wide angle projections and the hypnotic sound create an immersive setting, where the visitor literally dives into the inspiring atmosphere. The visitor is then confronted with four possible scenarios for the future – linear, exponential, cyclic or chaotic – while interacting with the soundtrack and projection using two prismatic devises. Nau2’s intervention also includes the design of the shop area, a stage for lectures as well as a mobile bar for events.
