ZOLLIKON BUILDING AUTHORITY

Renovation of Office and Reception Areas

Client: District of Zollikon
Location: Zollikon, Zurich
Date: 2001-2003

In 2001, Nau2 (formerly DGJ) won the competition for the new master plan of the public spaces in Zollikon. This led to an ongoing collaboration with the city council, particularly with the building department. In 2002, the department commissioned Nau2 (formerly DGJ) to redesign their offices and reception area. The conversion of these spaces seeks to enable better, uninterrupted working while also improving customer service. The existing facilities were completely gutted; the resulting space was divided into offices and a public meeting area. The offices were partitioned from each other and from the circulation spaces with sound-insulating glazing and thus form an ideal working environment. The reception desk allows Zollikon residents and clients to interact on a personal level.

The large bar forms an informal conference table where plans and documents can be laid out. A large scale map of the city is screen printed on the back wall of the meeting area, providing an essential visual aid for locating the projects discussed during meetings and supporting the understanding of urban spaces and the city structure. The non-public office areas are situated behind this feature wall. Based on their input, the layout of the working environment has been tailored to employees’ needs, which helped to optimize the building department’s administrative processes. All the furniture and the entire interior fit-out, from glazing and doors to ceiling finishes and partition walls, were individually designed and custom built to meet this elegant city’s exceptionally high standards for quality.
