Immersive Cocoon

A Prototype for a Transportable, Fully Immersive Space

Location: worldwide
Date: 2008 – 2010

The Immersive Cocoon begins with a simple premise: the digitally created worlds that we visit every day through two-dimensional screens are expanded and deepened into navigable 3D space. This four-meter sphere provides the gateway to these worlds with a 360° interior dome display and the same sophisticated motion-sensing software that inspired the film Minority Report. Suddenly, ‘virtual’ space surrounds the user in built form; navigation is accomplished using simple hand gestures and intuitive body movements.

Cocoons can be privately leased or used as 21st century telephone booths, with session time booked on the go via smart phone. One can easily start a teleconference with other Cocoon users around the world, making it an ideal option to work remotely or to initiate an intense round of gaming. In an educational role, one could tour a recreated Pompeii or sunken Egyptian tombs, or even float under the sea, with quick facts and further information just a touch away. A virtual trainer can use tracking cameras to monitor the user’s progress and evaluate movements, providing encouragement or corrections to the body’s position – the applications are nearly endless.
